Abstract

A longer time to diagnosis determines a poor prognosis in cancer patients, mainly in aggressive brain tumors, such as glioblastoma (GBM), determining an average 1-year survival in 30% of cases. In this context, the biomarkers research for early detection and prognostic evaluation is very important to improve outcomes of GBM patients. The present study is a narrative literature review. We analyzed 33 articles, selected between the years 2007 and 2022, considering the BAP1 protein and its relationship with the establishment of GBM neoplasms. The BAP1 gene, located on 3p21.1 locus, encodes the primary catalytic domain of the BAP1 protein, which removes ubiquitin signals from protein substrates. BAP1 acts in many cell signaling pathways that regulate the tumors establishment, such as cell death, cell cycle control and proliferation, DNA damage response, and chromatin modification.  Although BAP1 has been considered a candidate tumor biomarker for prognosis response in different types of tumors, further investigations are necessary to determine these target interactions and their role as a biomarker in central nervous system tumors, including GBM.
