Cervical Cancer: the importance of early diagnosis and preventive measures

Currently, there are more than 200 types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), classified into high and low oncogenic risk, with types 16 and 18 (high risk) being the main triggers of Cervical Cancer (CCU), a pathology to which it is directly related. to the increasing incidence and mortality rates in the Brazilian female population. Based on data from the literature, in the Brazilian context, the North and Northeast regions cover a significant amount of mortality from CC, while the Southeast and South regions have low rates. Furthermore, it is known that there are several cofactors that, associated with the transmission of HPV through sexual contact, predispose to the development of uterine neoplasia, which normally start from intraepithelial lesions, lesions such as low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) and high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). The main forms of diagnosis occur through the Pap smear test and/or molecular methodologies, such as hybrid capture and Polymerase Chain Reaction. On the other hand, treatment is associated with the multifactorial nature and degree of the injury, which is identified by diagnostic tests. As a prophylactic action, the administration of three vaccines available in Brazil stands out: bivalent, quadrivalent and nonavalent, which occasionally require population adherence and participation to ensure their effectiveness as a preventive method. In this context, this work aims to disseminate scientifically proven information to the Brazilian population about this type of carcinoma, through a narrative review of the literature, focusing on the importance of early diagnosis and prevention measures. Furthermore, considering the lack of knowledge of a significant portion of the population regarding diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods, the preparation of this work is justified in order to make the population aware of the importance of seeking clinical evaluation and early therapeutic resources.
